TikTok GMV Max is TikTok Shop's automated campaign type. You choose the products, a daily budget and a target return (ROI); TikTok decides who sees what, where, and with which content, using your videos, creator and affiliate videos, LIVE and product listings, to maximise total shop sales. Results depend mostly on your products, offer, content volume and a margin-based ROI target.
- GMV stands for gross merchandise value: the total value of everything your shop sells.
- TikTok controls delivery; you control products, offers, content and the ROI target.
- Break-even ROI = selling price ÷ (price − product, shipping, fees and returns). Set the target a little above it.
- GMV Max needs new video every week from your brand, creators and AI-assisted edits.
- Judge it on profit after costs, not on GMV alone.
TikTok Shop sellers keep hearing the same advice: “just switch to GMV Max”. It’s half right. GMV Max can scale a shop faster than manual campaigns, but only if you feed it the right things. When it fails, it’s almost never the settings. It’s the products, the offer, the content or the return target.
This guide explains what GMV Max is, what it controls and what you still control, and the weekly routine we use at Adgrove to scale TikTok Shop sales with it.
What is TikTok GMV Max?
GMV Max is TikTok Shop’s automated campaign type. GMV stands for gross merchandise value: the total value of everything your shop sells.
Instead of choosing audiences, placements and individual ads, you give GMV Max three things:
- The products it can promote
- A daily budget
- A target return (ROI): how much sales value you want back for every unit of ad spend
TikTok then decides who sees what, where, and with which content. It can use your own videos, videos made by creators and affiliates who promote your products, LIVE sessions and product listings. It optimises for total shop sales, not just the sales from one ad.
What GMV Max controls, and what you still control
The easiest way to think about GMV Max: TikTok controls delivery, you control the inputs.
| TikTok decides | You decide |
|---|---|
| Who sees your products | Which products are in the campaign |
| Where they see them (feed, search, LIVE, shop tab) | Price, bundles and offers |
| Which videos get spend | How much new content it has to choose from |
| How fast to spend the budget | The ROI target and the budget |
That’s why two shops with identical settings can get completely different results. The one with better products, a stronger offer and more good video wins.
How should I set my GMV Max ROI target?
Set it from your margin, not from a guess. Your break-even ROI is the point where ad spend eats all the money left after product and fulfilment costs:
Break-even ROI = Selling price ÷ (Selling price − product, shipping, fees and returns)
Example. You sell a product for $30. Product cost, shipping, TikTok fees and an allowance for returns add up to $18. That leaves $12 per order before ads.
Break-even ROI = 30 ÷ 12 = 2.5
Below 2.5, every order loses money. A sensible starting target is a little above break-even, for example 2.8 to 3.0, so there’s profit left. Set it far higher and GMV Max may barely spend; set it below break-even and it will happily spend your money at a loss.
Change the target in small steps and give each change a few days. Big swings reset what the campaign has learned.
What does GMV Max need to work?
1. Products that sell on impulse
GMV Max scales products people buy within seconds of seeing them demonstrated. If a product needs a long explanation, research or trust in your brand first, start with web conversion campaigns or build that trust with content before pushing GMV Max hard.
2. An offer that makes the decision easy
Bundles, a clear saving and free shipping thresholds matter more on TikTok than almost anywhere, because buyers compare instantly. Raising order value with bundles also makes a given ROI target easier to hit.
3. A steady flow of video
This is where most shops fall short. GMV Max can only choose between the content it has. If it has five videos, it will wear them out. We plan for new videos every week, from three sources:
- Your own content: demos, before-and-after, founder videos
- Creators and affiliates: people who promote your products for commission, often your cheapest and most convincing content
- AI-assisted variations: new hooks, captions and edits of videos that already work
4. Creators who actually sell
Views aren’t sales. Brief creators with the hooks and angles that already convert, and reward the ones whose videos produce orders, not likes.
Our weekly GMV Max routine
- Monday: check the numbers that matter. GMV, orders, ad spend, ROI against target, and profit after costs, not just GMV.
- Look at the content report. Which videos got spend and sold? Brief more like them.
- Add new content. Fresh videos from creators, the brand and AI-assisted edits.
- Adjust the ROI target in small steps. Up if it’s spending comfortably above target; down a little if it can’t spend and you have margin to spare.
- Prune products. Products that get spend but don’t sell drag the campaign down. Remove them or fix the offer.
Common GMV Max mistakes
- Setting the ROI target without knowing your margin. It either won’t spend or spends at a loss.
- Not enough content. The most common reason results fade after a good first week.
- Changing everything at once. Change one thing, wait, measure.
- Judging it on GMV alone. GMV isn’t profit. Track what’s left after product, fees, shipping and returns.
- Pushing the wrong products. Not every bestseller elsewhere is an impulse buy on TikTok.
When GMV Max isn’t the right choice
GMV Max is built for TikTok Shop. If TikTok Shop isn’t available in your market, or you sell high-consideration products, run TikTok conversion campaigns to your own website instead. The same principles apply: strong offer, lots of native video, and decisions based on profit.

Frequently asked questions
What does GMV mean on TikTok?
GMV means gross merchandise value: the total value of products sold through your TikTok Shop in a period, before costs and returns.
How do I set the ROI target in GMV Max?
Work out your break-even ROI from your margin (selling price divided by what's left after product, shipping, fees and returns), then set the target slightly above it. Change it in small steps and give each change a few days.
Why is my GMV Max campaign not spending?
Usually the ROI target is too high for your products and margin, or the campaign has too little content to work with. Lower the target slightly if you have margin, and add new videos.
Can I use GMV Max without TikTok Shop?
No. GMV Max is for TikTok Shop. Without a shop, run TikTok conversion campaigns to your own website.
